Azure's AI datacenter architecture pre-validated for NVIDIA Vera Rubin: 6th-gen NVLink, ConnectX-9, HBM4/4e
Azure Hardware Systems and Infrastructure President Rani Borkar's official Jan 5, 2026 Azure blog details Azure's technical readiness for NVIDIA's Vera Rubin platform, integrating into current Fairwater sites in Wisconsin and Atlanta and future locations (not Azure Local). Rubin Superchips are specified at 50 PF NVFP4 inference per chip and 3.6 EF NVFP4 per rack (a 5x jump over GB200 NVL72). Azure states it has pre-built for Rubin's requirements: 6th-gen NVLink (~260 TB/s scale-up bandwidth), NVIDIA ConnectX-9 1,600 Gb/s scale-out networking, HBM4/HBM4e thermal and density planning, SOCAMM2 memory expansion, and reticle-sized multi-die GPU packaging. The post also traces Azure's NVIDIA lineage: early large-scale Ampere and Hopper GPU deployments (via NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand) powering models like GPT-3.5, followed by the first and largest implementations of both NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 and GB300 NVL72.
