Fairwater Wisconsin physical build: 315-acre/3-building campus, >90% closed-loop liquid cooling, dedicated storage building, re-architected Azure Blob Storage for GPU training
Microsoft's official Sept 18, 2025 blog post detailing its Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin Fairwater AI superfactory discloses physical construction and infrastructure specifics not previously captured in the graph: a 315-acre, 3-building, ~1.2 million sq ft campus built with 46.6 miles of structural piles, 26.5 million lbs of structural steel, 120 miles of medium-voltage electrical cable, and 72.6 miles of mechanical piping. Racks use a two-story design. Cooling is >90% closed-loop liquid cooling -- Microsoft describes the initial fill as equivalent to roughly 20 homes' annual water use, replaced only about every 6+ years, calling it one of the largest water-cooled chiller plants it has built, backed by 172 twenty-foot fans for air-side redundancy. A separate, dedicated storage/compute building -- described by Microsoft as "five football fields in length" -- houses a re-architected Azure Blob Storage layer supporting 2M+ transactions/sec per storage account at exabyte scale, with BlobFuse2 used for GPU node-local reads during training. GB200 NVL72 racks at the site deliver 1.8TB/s NVLink bandwidth, 14TB of pooled memory per rack, and roughly 865,000 tokens/sec per rack in Microsoft's benchmarking. This is Microsoft's own primary-source physical/cooling/storage disclosure, distinct from GPU-count or compute-capacity claims found elsewhere.
